CARY HIGH SCHOOL
This bulletin contains some important information for students and their parents about the Cary High School’s NovaNET Summer School program. Students and their parents both need to understand the requirements and expectations for completion of the summer school.
Tuition for the Summer Program is FREE for students working on course credit recovery.
Summer School Coordinator Alan Trogdon can be contacted by email at ptrogdon@wcpss.net for questions or concerns. Space is limited to 30 participants from Cary High School. Students will apply for the Summer Program. Enrollment will be on a priority basis after credits are finalized at the end of the current school year according to WCPSS guidelines:
One day in summer school is equivalent to approximately one week of regular school. This makes clear the necessity for regular attendance.
1. TWO (2) absences are allowed for all courses. Upon the third absence, the student is subject to being dropped from the course with a grade of “F” and without credit.
2. Summer School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m.
· Students must be on time both at the beginning of class and at the end of each break.
· Students arriving after 9:30 am or leaving before 10:00 am will be counted absent for the entire day. Students arriving between 8:45-9:29 am or checking out between 10:00-11:15 am will be counted absent for ˝ day. Students arriving late (before 8:15) or leaving early (after 11:15) will be given one tardy.
· THREE (3) tardies will be counted as ONE (1) absence. This absence will count toward the two-absence limit and result in dropping the student from the course.
Coursework is for recovery of failed credits in English 1, 2, 3, or 4, Social Studies, Mathematics, or Health to meet graduation or promotion requirements according to the priority schedule. English classes will have both an on-line and classroom components required for earning credit. Students and their parents must sign a contract of expectations for behavior and performance as a condition for enrollment. All students must complete all specified units/modules successfully to earn credit for the course attempted. Freshmen and sophomores in “Big 5” EOC courses have the additional requirement of scoring level 3 or 4 on the EOC exam to receive credit. “BIG 5” EOCs (Algebra I, English 1, US History, Civics and Economics, and Biology) will be administered to freshmen and sophomores on August 5th (retest 1 on August 6th, intervention on Aug 7th, and 2nd retest on Aug 11th). All other exams will be administered on the last day of summer school on August 7th.
